summer reboot: new garden, new kid, and new website
Updated: Sep 19
some summers are all lemonade and lazy afternoons. ours apparently decided to show up wearing work boots, carrying a puppy, and yelling, “fresh start!”
so, here we are with a new puppy, a fresh website start, and a garden reboot that has turned into equal parts joy, gravel, hauling the sprinkler around, and discussing “wait, did we plant that or is it plotting against us?”
dougie arrived and immediately took over the hearts of everyone he met
dougie arrived right at the end of the school year and spent his summer:
growing extremely large
grinning and slobbering
stealing socks and chomping whatever he could get in his mouth
chasing and being chased by his brothers
visiting summer camp, the hardware store, the bookstore, and anywhere else we could take him
every time we have a new puppy we realize that we forgot what it was like to have a baby in the house. puppies don’t just enter a home. the arrive like a weather system. one minute everything is calm, the next there’s squeaky toys everywhere, teeth where you'd least expect them, and always someone asking, “what are you doing, puppy?”
we missed wren so much when his time came, and dougie has really put the silly pep back in our family's step.
then we decided to reboot the website
the podcast experiment is over. rip, barklife. it was fun while it was fun and then it became work and we didn't want a fun thing to be work. so we restored our old domain name and scrubbed everything down to the ground.
but we also are always working on the house
this was the year of the garden.
the garden reboot has not been about perfection (how could it be? we have no idea what we're doing) but instead about making the space feel alive. a place for the deer and rabbits to hang out. somewhere for the fireflies to grow. a paradise for birds and butterflies. it's a work in progress, and the backyard even more so (wildlife, it is no surprise, do not like to hang out with otis), but it feels nice to get splashes of color and hear the twitter of birds. there have been lessons learned about digging, weeding, different options for mulch, how much gravel is in a ton, how tenacious pokeweed is, and many other things. but we're figuring it out. we just wish it wasn't so ding danged hot here in the summer.
